The myths and mysteries that surround this subject bear little resemblance to the true facts. What takes place is a very normal, completely safe, non-magical process that produces predictable results, time after time. But before we can truly understand what Hypnosis is, we first must understand what it is not.
What Hypnosis is NOT!
Lets take a look at some of the more common myths associated with Hypnosis and put them into a common-sense perspective. Hypnosis is NOT magic. There is no magic involved. There is certainly nothing evil or satanic or paranormal about hypnosis. No swinging watch chains, flashing lights or spinning wheels. In fact only the human voice is used to induce a state of hypnosis and a reassuring manner to put you at ease coupled with the expertise to help you with your problem. There is absolutely no question of being controlled or manipulated. In reality, no one can be made to do anything they do not want to do which would be contrary to their own moral judgments, values or beliefs. A person in hypnosis is NOT asleep, but is fully aware of what is taking place, in fact even more so than usual, as their senses are functioning more efficiently than normal. There is no such thing as a hypnotized feeling, so you certainly won't feel as though you are in a trance, but you will be aware of pleasant feelings of mental and physical relaxation. You cannot be forced into a state of hypnosis. This idea goes back to the erroneous belief that some kind of magic is involved, where the "hypnotist" has magical powers that can make his "victim" submit to the power of his mind. Of course this is nonsense. In reality, if you do not want to enter the state of hypnosis you won’t. Note: There are certain stage performers' techniques that can be used to induce a state of hypnosis in certain subjects without them realizing it has happened. Appropriate suggestions and "trigger" words are given to the subject before and during the induction, so they will easily enter a state of hypnosis and then act on those "triggers" when told to. There is nothing magical about this, it is purely the power of suggestion. Advertisers have been using similar techniques for decades, especially on television, to suggest to a captive audience that they all need this or that product. The power of suggestion! Lets take that train of thought one-step further. It follows that the very knowledge that someone is a "hypnotist" is often a sufficient suggestion in itself to cause a person to enter a hypnotic state when that "hypnotist" tells them to. Even then, the person enters the state willingly but without realizing why. So, if that is what hypnosis is not, then...
What actually is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural phenomenon and is best described as "a state of relaxation and concentration combined with heightened awareness". During hypnotherapy the critical facility is by passed so there is an open exchange with the sub-conscious mind. So hypnosis is (rather disappointingly one might think) just a deep natural state of physical relaxation combined with a relaxed yet focused mind. Hypnosis is a state almost anyone can enter if they want to. You cannot be forced into hypnosis, despite what some egotistical stage performers might want you to believe. It has to be voluntary, i.e. you have to agree to enter the state of hypnosis. In fact, when you think about it, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The so-called "hypnotist" is really just a normal person who has learned how to assist a person enter the state of hypnosis using certain vocal or other techniques. The "hypnotist" is just the catalyst that enables a person to enter the state by relaxing their body, and focusing their mind: usually on the voice of the "hypnotist". The rest is suggestion where the conscious mind and the subconscious mind can believe the same message and manifest that thought by behavioral change. Once you have entered the state of hypnosis, you remain completely aware of what is going on around you. You also remain in complete control. This is why some people believe that they can't be "hypnotized". They don't realize when they are in a state of hypnosis, because they don't feel any different. While there are several levels of "deepness" of hypnosis, you only need to enter a fairly light state of hypnosis for hypnotherapy to be effective. This means that you are fully aware of everything that is going on around you. You can hear the "hypnotist's" voice and afterward you can remember everything that was said. You will feel pleasantly relaxed and almost lethargic. Your mind may wander off occasionally just the same as it can when you are listening to a speaker or lecturer drone on about something! When you return to normal conscious awareness, at the end of the session, you open your eyes and feel rested, calm and contented. You are then fully conscious, fully awake, alert and immediately able to get on with whatever you want to.
Analytical Hypnotherapy:
Any discussion of hypnosis should start out with this basic premise: the basis for reasoning.
The subconscious mind controls the body, attitude and behavior. It controls your life mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually and in every other way.
There is no reason at all why anyone should have to put up with something that is inside of themselves but outside their control. Emotional and psychological problems respond particularly well to this treatment. Based on the doctrine of cause and effect, the object of analytical therapy is to search for and discover the original reason, or cause of a particular behavioral problem, such as a phobia, anxiety, depression, lack of confidence, or fear. Having revealed, faced the cause, and doing any forgiveness work that needs to be done thus removing the cause, a permanent relief of the symptom is achieved. This type of therapy uses hypnosis to aid the process of random recall of past events, which is known as free association. An emotionally important event from the past may be hidden from the conscious mind, but linked with a 'protective' pattern of behavior such as a phobia, anxiety, depression, or a physical symptom such as a stuttering, or stammer. By re-examining past events and allowing the associated emotion to be released, those patterns of behavior, the symptoms, become unnecessary and therefore cease.
Medical Hypnoanalysis:
Certain problems respond particularly well to medical hypnoanalysis. Successful cases include phobias (i.e. claustrophobia, agoraphobia, etc.), anxiety and panic attacks, migraine, sexual problems, severe eating disorders (i.e. anorexia, bulimia), stuttering and depression. The use of hypnosis dramatically "speeds up" the analysis process, achieving in a matter of weeks what would normally be expected of the more conventional "1,000 hour analysis". Analytical Therapy and Medical Hypnoanalysis usually takes between 5 to 10 weekly sessions, of about 2 hours each, although this is only a guideline as every person is unique and individual needs differ accordingly. Many resolutions take place promptly.
There are circumstances where the subconscious mind is wide open to suggestion, the first is the very young before a personal history has been developed. You can tell a young soul anything and they will except that information as fact. You can tell them that they are beautiful, loved, wanted, smart and can achieve anything they want in life and sooner or later they will produce evidence to support that in put. Likewise, you can tell that child that they were never wanted, will never amount to anything, no one will ever love them and that they will end up lazy and a drunk like their father or fat and ugly like their mother and sooner or later, they will produce evidence to support those suggestions. These suggestions don't necessarily need to be spoken. They can be feelings, thoughts or perceptions. Nonetheless, just as real to the subconscious mind. Over the years working with numerous survivors of incest, child abuse, extremely disfunctional families (alcoholism, anger/rage,physical abuse), and criminal activities, I have seen clients turn their entire lives around in just a few sessions. During times of such trauma, accidents, war, death or divorce the subconscious mind is wide open to suggestion, either real or percieved. Many of the feelings of guilt, worthlessness, shame, hurt, anger, pain or a mix of other negative thoughts or feelings are the direct results of these incidents. Therapeutic techniques I have developed over the years along with hypnotherapy can result in miraculous life changes freeing the client from the past.
Dental Hypnosis: Dental hypnosis is an important part of my practice. Along with the major dental problems of Bruxism, TMD/TMJ, Uncontrollable Gag Reflex and Excessive Salivating and Bleeding that can all be overcome by hypnosis there’s dental anxiety. Dental anxiety, fear and phobia can keep a person out of a chair until the amount of work needed is enormous. This is extremely unfortunate as dental anxiety can be treated much easier then most would believe. Hypnosis is the most effective approach to overcoming this severe problem.
DENTAL ANXIETY is a reaction to an UNKNOWN danger, and the individual anticipates the worst even from relatively straightforward procedures. Anxiety is extremely common, and most people experience some degree of dental anxiety especially if they're about to have something done which they've never experienced before. Basically, it's a fear of the unknown.
DENTAL FEAR is a reaction to a known danger ("I know what the dentist is going to do, been there, done that - I'm scared"), which involves a fight or flight response when confronted with the threatening stimulus.
DENTAL PHOBIA is basically the same as fear, only much stronger ("I know what happens when I go to the dentist, there is no way I'm going back if I can help it. I'm so terrified I feel sick"). Also, the fight or flight response occurs when just thinking about or being reminded of the threatening situation. Someone with a dental phobia will avoid dental care at all costs until either a physical problem or the psychological burden of the phobia becomes overwhelming.
Pain Control: A client seeking pain control must first have a referral from a Physician. It is extremely important that pain (a very valuable symptom) isn’t removed or masked before an evaluation has been made to determine the cause. Acute pain is a warning that something is wrong and that treatment is needed. Pain is also useful as protection to guard the healing process from further injury, i.e. a sprain will be painful guarding you from walking on it before it has healed sufficiently. However, chronic pain serving no purpose maybe unpleasant; it may also be destructive and incapacitating. Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool to help the alleviation of chronic pain such as in arthritis, fibromyalgia, CFS, TMJ, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, etc. All pain is real, whether actual or psychosomatic only the choice of treatment is variable.
Phobias :
A phobia is best described as an irrational or unreasonable fear of an everyday object or situation. To a non-sufferer, getting into an elevator is something they don't even think about, whereas to the claustrophobic (fears enclosed spaces), it is such a terrifying ordeal that they will avoid the situation at all costs. Similarly, where one person can happily pick up a small spider from a bath and put it out the window, the arachnophobia will be terrified of the same, yet apparently huge, eight legged monster. Each situation may seem silly to anyone else, who may typically say, "Don't be such a coward", or "Face up to your fear. However, it is quite serious and very real to the sufferer, but they have no logical explanation why they feel the way they do.
Analysis v Suggestion:
I use medical hypnoanalysis to deal with phobias as well as anxieties and other deeply rooted psychological problems, because it deals with the cause of the problem and not just the symptom. Suggestion therapy only deals with the symptom: the cause remains. Take this example to illustrate the difference: Someone suffers from a severe pain in their back. They go to see their GP who can prescribe pain medication, the doctor has dealt with the symptom: the pain medication has removed the pain, but it may return if they stop taking the tablets. This is synonymous with Suggestion Therapy. So the GP refers them to a specialist, who recommends surgery. The surgeon removes the cause and the pain is gone. This is synonymous with Analysis. The use of Suggestion Therapy to attempt to remove a phobia, say for instance claustrophobia, may, in some cases appear to work. The behavior pattern that was protective of the cause, the phobia (symptom), may have been removed, but because the cause remains, a new protective pattern of behavior must be created and a phenomenon known as symptom substitution can appear. When this happens, where the person is no longer claustrophobic, they may now have acquired the opposite problem, a fear of going out into the open, known as agoraphobia or something equally as nasty. Of course, that person will sing the praises of the hypnotist who "cured" them of their claustrophobia. Then they find themselves having to spend more time and money going back to that "wonderful" hypnotist to get rid of the newly acquired agoraphobia. And so it can go on. Another substituted symptom will appear and the person will be back to square one. So that's why I personally refrain from using suggestion therapy to treat phobias (or other deeper rooted psychological problems, such as anxiety and panic attacks, depression, stuttering and stammers and many more).
The Analysis: (What's involved): Analytical Therapy sounds a little heavy going, but in reality is quite enlightening. At each weekly session, a client is regressed to a point in their own past, a time frame that their subconscious mind has prepared for them to reveal and they simply verbally relate whatever memory comes to them, in as much detail as they can. It’s a bit like mentally traveling back into your personal history while talking out loud about everything that is happening in your thoughts.
Some memories will be fond ones, some not so nice, and some they may cringe at the thought of them. Eventually memories all surface for a reason and it feels good to get them off your chest. Eventually some memories that are not too well remembered start to surface until, usually without warning, the event that was repressed is revealed along with the associated emotion and the whole experience. This is generally the Initial Sensitizing Event, a point of surprising and liberating enlightenment and catharsis takes place. It usually marks the end of analysis and the end of the problem permanently. * Only a highly trained regression hypnotherpist can identify the Initial Sensitizing Event (ISE) from the Symptom Producing Event (SPE) and the Symptom Intensifying Event (SIE). These are all found during hypnoanalysis. The cause has been dealt with by the mature adult mind - the client has come to terms with it and released it. The cause has been removed and because there is now no reason for the protective pattern of behavior, the symptom is also removed. Permanently. They will never have to suffer that particular problem again. When the client leaves the consulting room for the last time, they feel absolutely wonderful and ready to get on with their life - a more happy and fulfilling life.
Suggestion Therapy:
This form of therapy is the best-known use of hypnosis. It makes use of the heightened susceptibility to beneficial suggestions in order to change bad habits for good ones and to build confidence. It has a particularly high success rate in helping people to stop smoking, to change eating habits and to lose weight, also in assisting people with pre-test nervousness, relief from stress and so on. It usually requires one or more weekly sessions of about 1 hour and a half each, except in the case of stopping smoking, which is outlined below. Suggestion therapy has been criticized for dealing only with the symptoms and not the cause. For this reason it is not recommended for deep-rooted psychological problems (see Analytical Therapy).
Stop Smoking:
There are many and varied methods around today to help people who really want to stop smoking to do just that. In a recent daytime television survey, it was discovered that hypnotherapy had the highest success rate out of all the alternative therapies and methods tried. These included acupuncture; nicotine patches; sheer will power, etc. Here at Oscoda Hypnotherapy Center, I use a single intensive "Stop Smoking" session to help smokers who want to stop, to become non-smokers. The session is divided into two parts. The first part is dedicated to informing the client of the many aspects of smoking and finally stopping:
* the health issues involved with smoking * why people have come to believe that stopping is so difficult * the psychological factors at work when people do stop * the importance of your commitment to stop
The second part is where I explain hypnosis and how it works. Then in an altered state I will test for a death wish or other deeply seated self defeating thoughts and remove them through a non-invasive technique referred to as ideomotor response. Rarely will I need to use hypnoanalysis to release these thoughts, but I have had those occasions. The suggestions given throughout the hypnosis part of the session are designed specifically to break the unconscious links a client has made by associating smoking with certain activities, as well as to reassure them that they really are much happier to be a non-smoker (which, of course is their aim in making the decision to stop smoking in the first place). The session also includes suggestions designed to counter the possibility and reduce the greatest fear of would-be ex-smokers: that of putting on weight. Sessions last about an hour and a half, after which they leave the consulting room as a non-smoker. Not someone who is giving up or has tried to give up (these ideas imply failure) but a non-smoker (a positive self belief). A free "Session Reinforcement" cassette tape/CD is given to complement the session. A follow up call is made within the next couple of days.
Lose Weight:
Again there are many different methods of losing weight. The most important factor you must consider before embarking on a weight loss program is to ask yourself: "Do I really need to lose weight?". If you can honestly answer: "Yes", and have already tried dieting and exercise without much success, and have consulted your doctor, then hypnotherapy might be the solution. The method used at Oscoda Hypnotherapy Center for weight loss where there is no obvious underlying cause (see the section on " Analytical Therapy"), is to use suggestion therapy and visualization techniques to achieve the size and weight you desire to be. You then set an achievable target: the amount of weight you want to lose and can reasonably expect to lose in a reasonably achievable time frame. Suggestions are used in hypnosis to erase the image of the unwanted, overweight person held in the mind and replace it with an image of the desired, fit and contented person at the correct weight. Coupled with powerfully worded suggestions that show you how to make a friend of your appetite so you only want to eat what you need and ignore the rest, the hypnotic session enables you to unconsciously need to eat less while still being satisfied. You therefore lose weight at a sensible pace - whatever is right for you as an individual. Sessions last about an hour and a half and at least two or more are recommended, but not essential. A free "Session Reinforcement" cassette tape is given to complement the session.
Lose Weight (Deep seated issues):
Generally putting on and carrying excess weight is not about food. Weight is often put on and kept on for protection, to fill a void, an emptiness, etc. These cases are all handled using medical hypnoanalysis.
Stress:
Stress affects many different people from many walks of life in many different ways and with varied severity. Hypnosis is a wonderful, natural way to achieve calmness and relaxation while coping with the stress that is around us. A session of relaxation therapy using hypnosis is a great way to wind down after a particularly stressful day at work. With this type of therapy, (assuming there is no deep rooted, underlying problem to deal with, where Analytical Therapy might be the better choice) you can just come along for a pre-booked appointment and really relax away the stresses of the day.
Exam Nerves:
As with stress management, exam nerves can be significantly reduced by the use of relaxation techniques in hypnosis and powerfully worded suggestions to enable you to "get through" that impending exam (whatever its nature, be it academic, driving, interviews... etc).
Sports Enhancement / Improvement:
In the world of sports, competitiveness requires that the need to achieve your very best is imperative. Once any achievement blocks have been identified and resolved, (if any) suggestions given in Hypnosis can have a great effect on the level of your performance in your chosen field. Hypnotic suggestion can make it possible to concentrate better, push yourself that extra bit harder and get that extra ounce of energy in order to achieve your goal.
Sexual Enhancement / Improvement: If there are no medical or underlying emotional issues for poor sexual performance, hypnosis with carefully worded and powerful suggestions can greatly improve sexual performance and pleasure. Partners can learn to enjoy sex in a way they may never have before. Of course deep-seated issues are dealt with using medical hypnoanalysis.
Spirit Releasement and Entity Removal
When we die, our soul leaves our body. Many times, these souls become stuck on the earth plane for many reasons. They may
choose to stay with their family, the place they died or another place that is important to them. Our Christian upbringing has
taught us that when we die there will be streets of gold, pearly gates and Angels with harps. When a soul leaves the body,
it is still in the same place, just another dimension. These souls can become confused and not know what to do next. Often these
souls will “attach” to a human so they can live vicariously through the living host. This can cause many problems for the human host,
including alcoholism, drug and other addictions, phobias, pain or disease. If these earth bound spirits while in life graved alcohol,
drugs, sex, had fears, pain or other self defeating behavior; the host may have these same conditions. These souls can stay attached
to their human host for many lifetimes causing problems in each lifetime if they are not removed. It is important to remove these
attached spirits using a technique known as Spirit Releasement or Entity Releasement.
Occasionally a dark energy will attach, these have been called dark ones or demoniac's. Professionals agree and disagree on these
forces based on their spiritual knowledge. If the therapist has no awareness of such things or have not been taught properly about
these entity’s than they may deny there existence. Other’s who know of such things may shy away from this therapy due to the
unconventional nature of this work, as opposed to more common therapy. However, these forces are as present today as they were
in biblical times.
How is Spirit Deposession or Spirit Releasement Done?
Techniques for removing attached or earthbound spirits requires many hours of specialty training. Experienced therapist may have
years of experience working with different techniques in different situations. It is best that the healer performing the entity removal
be thoroughly trained and experienced as many times things are not as they seem. Occasionally what may be thought as an entity
maybe a sub-personality or an altered ego which must be integrated and not released.
Battling Spirits
Some entities do not want to leave. They may be quite comfortable with their host, they may have been attached
to them for many lifetimes and have formed a strong bond with their host or they may be afraid to leave. Many have a fear of hell
and damnation. There are times when it is necessary to actually negotiate with a spirit to convince it that it has to leave.
Then spirits and entity’s are lovingly ushered into their appropriated place in the light. This is not something that an inexperienced
healer should attempt.
Angels
I’m then able to clear the negative energy from the host and changes in the client’s behavior takes place quite rapidly.I have
years of experience working with Angelic forces working with and guided by the Archangel Uriel. Often angels commonly called rescue
angels, then usher released spirits into their appropriate place in the Light (Heaven), other times loved ones come for them.
This is a most gratifying work. One, the earth bound is free to go to the light and carry on with their souls’ journey. Two, the host the
(client) is free then to live their own life free of internal interference.
